At some point in time, many of us have considered supplementation. Whether it was due to a suggestion from a friend, a healthcare provider, or a commercial on TV, we have made the consideration. The biggest problem is choosing the right one. One study says this is good for you in several cases, and another says it's not good for you. WHO'S RIGHT?! I get it. This isn't very clear. You may be relieved to know that successful supplementation is possible. Below are a few suggestions to ponder when considering supplementation.
1. Think about why you are considering supplementation.
• Do you have valid health concerns that supplementation can address? You don’t want to put anything in your body that does not benefit your overall health. This can be supplements or food. Everything we put into our bodies should serve a purpose.
2. If necessary, make sure you discussed your reasons for supplementation with your healthcare provider.
• If a healthcare provider is already treating you, make sure your choice for supplementation will not adversely affect your current treatment plan. If you feel you need changes to your current treatment plan, discuss this with your healthcare provider.
3. If you find that supplementation is the right choice for you, choose the right supplements.
• Much can be said about the purity and quality of over-the-counter supplements. Unfortunately, much of the market is not regulated. Make sure you are getting what you paid for by using products from reputable suppliers.
Although these suggestions are not an exhaustive list of things to consider when choosing supplementation, they are a start. One final point to consider is to remember supplementation is not a substitute for healthy nutrition. A good supplementation program will support healthy nutrition and vice versa.
